Dry Eyes
At Clearsight Opticians, we conduct an in-depth examination to assess if you have dry eyes and to the level of severity. We understand that having dry eyes seriously impacts your quality of life, so we take the time needed to establish the root cause of your dry eye.
What is dry eye syndrome?
So many people suffer from this syndrome without knowing that it is an actual disease. This disease is a condition in which there are insufficient tears in the eyes to nourish, sustain and help lubricate them. Patients with dry eye have a very poor quality of tears or they do not even have enough to sustain the eyes. The tears are made up of 3 layers, an oily layer at the top, a watery layer in the middle and a sticky layer at the bottom which holds the two together. If the oily layer evaporates too quickly, that causes the watery layer to destabilise and you can either get your eyes feeling gritty, irritated, itchy or cause the eyes to stream down with water.
What are the causes?
There are several causes of dry eyes. However, 80% of the cases are due to blocked oil glands in the eye lids, also known as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), which provide the oily layer of the tears. Other causes include: Smoking; Ageing (most people >50-65 years of age experience dry eyes symptoms; Environment- exposure to wind; dry air or dry climates can evaporate the tears, directing car heaters, air conditioners, fans and hair dryers also evaporate your tears; Drugs: some kind of medications, like antidepressants, decongestants and blood pressure medications can cause the symptoms and lastly, Health conditions like immune system disorders (such as Sjogren’s disease), and arthritis.
